MAEIN Centre of Humanitarian and Development Excellence
About Us
The Maein Initiative to create the Centre for Humanitarian and Development Excellence - is a non-profit initiative established to support the localization of humanitarian and development action in aid recipient countries, ensuring alignment with international standards of effectiveness and efficiency whilst also considering local values and contexts. Our process begins with an independent assessment of the capacities of local humanitarian and development organizations. This assessment is turned to a comprehensive institutional development to enhance the quality and sustainability of local respondents and to improve their impact on communities in need. Further support is provided through new knowledge, expertise, and best practices.
Why We Exist
The Maein initiative emerged from extensive research aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the humanitarian and development system, with the goal of creating a more stable, sustainable, and prosperous world. The research found the following:
1- The lack of aid localization in recipient countries is a critical obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
2- The current pace of localization indicates that the 2020 localization target, by the first Humanitarian Summit in 2016 for 2020, may not be reached before many decades.
3- There is a need to devise effective solutions to overcome barriers to localization—building on the relative strengths accomplished by field actors and their opportunities for growth.
Vision
Pioneering the localization of humanitarian and development action in areas of need, in accordance with international standards, whilst respecting local contexts.
Mission
We promote investment in local action and community leadership to increase impact of aid. Maein aims at strengthening the capacity and resources of local organisations to respond to crises and promote long-term sustainability. To achieve this, we focus on the following objectives:
Enhance the professionalism, competence, and transparency of local humanitarian and development organizations, enabling them to respond more effectively to the needs of their communities.
Provide crisis prone zones with credible local partners who adhere to international standards of integrity, transparency and accountability, discern and prioritize community needs, and respect local values.
Support the localization through continuous learning and organizational transformation, knowledge dissemination, innovation, and research to achieve sustainable impact.
